“Old Wrecker” depicts a rusted tow truck that sits off of State Rd. 39, just outside of Michigan City, Indiana. 20×16″ acrylic on canvas. This painting was featured on the cover of the Flint Institute of Arts’ Art School catalog, summer 2017.

The Shiawassee Arts Center kicked off its 20th Annual Member Artists Show with a reception on Sunday, May 7. Seventy nine artists from  mid-Michigan submitted paintings, photography, ceramics, weaving, and mixed media to the art show. This year’s guest juror was artist B.B. Winslow of Midland, who is the retired director of the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art of the Midland Center for the Arts.

Mr. Winslow praised the art center and its members for their “level of advanced creativity and execution” during this year’s exhibition. Twelve awards were presented to various artist for recognition in such categories as dramatic lighting, printmaking, sculpture, abstract art, photography, and jewelry, to name a few.

Rich Tesner’s painting received a merit award for his painting, “The Old Wrecker”, which depicts an old rusted tow truck sitting next to a field. Guest Juror B.B. Winslow had this to say about Rich’s acrylic painting, “The Award for Painting by Rich Tesner, was wonderfully painted in its gestural freedom, noting the asymmetrical composition off-center to the right, and its almost symmetrical stratified composition, top to bottom. A sentimentality and authenticity that “The Old Wrecker” exudes, made it my favorite work in the exhibition. Well-painted, with crisp chromatic control.”

Other members receiving recognition included Anni Crouter, Marie Lauer, Marscia Guetschow, Doug DeLind, Larry Szczepanik, Mary Wonser, Guy Adamec, Joel Ellis, Karl Racenis, Jill Doederlein, and Bonnie Brown.

The Shiawassee Arts Center 20th Annual Member Artists Show is open to the public at the Shiawassee Arts Center, in Owosso, until June 25.
